New city centre hotel receiving decent
customer feedback. The recently-built Go Inn has been receiving reasonable ratings on various travel sites, and could be a valid option for those looking for a city-centre hotel (it is very close to the opera house). Our comments, with hotel contact details: Go Inn. |

First case of Dengue
Type 4 registered in Amazonas. This is the wet season, and a time when - wherever you are - the number of mosquitoes is highest, and therefore the chances of getting malaria or dengue (types 1,2,3, or 4) are similarly at their peak. Although you will be at extremely low risk generally on the Rio Negro, it is always worth trying to minimise your chances of being bitten - see our health page for more. No doubt given impulse by the 2014 World Cup, the new 90-room hotel complex will be built 100km from Manaus on the BR174 interstate road, and the hotel chain is already in talks with FIFA with respect to offering training facilities and accommodation to one of the hosted teams. Manaus Airport and flights 2011 Work begins on the expansion of Manaus airport in January 2011. The airport is the worst in Brazil in terms of flight delays (48% of flights delayed), and works may worsen rather than improve the situation in the short term. Keep up to date with the visitmanaus blog. |
| 29/12/2010 | River Levels 2011 River levels have now recovered and should be up to 19m by January, allowing access to most places (Lago Janauari with care) from early January onwards. |

Construction Work, Ponta Negra This work is part of the preparations for the World Cup in 2014. The first stage involves the closing off of the area that extends from the Hotel Tropical to a point approximately 1km along the waterfront. The official duration of the work is 360 days (although they never give you an official start date, so that you can never complain if they over-run). In any case, the disruption is likely to continue until at least the end of 2011. The main impacts are: 1. The open-air amphitheatre is closed; 2. The restaurant next to the Hotel Tropical, the Caderada Grill, is closed, as is the little bar O Laranjinha, where there were nightly performances of Boi-Bumbá; 3. The first aid and tourist police stations are closed or moved (no
further information on this yet); 4. The main bus stop for buses serving the city centre (mainly the no. 120) is now moved to the other end of the Ponta Negra, near the turn-off to the Avenida do Turismo. |
