Hotels outside the city centre tend to be slightly better, although in many cases the official stars seem to have been self-awarded.

The supposed "Gold Standard" in Manaus has always been the Hotel Tropical  - not only is it the best-known hotel in Manaus, but has been associated with five stars since it was built in the 1970´s, and is the ‘standard’ by which all other establishments are generally judged. The grounds are indisputably good, as is the location. But there it seems to stop, and guests in 2009/2010 have consistently complained about poor value generally, and specifically about (for example) the lack of English-speaking staff (the lingua franca of the majority of guests is English), the lack of any English newspapers, magazines, journals or books, unfriendly staff, poor food and scruffy rooms.  

Moving down the food chain, you will come to places which advertise 4 stars. Well, if the Tropical has 5, you can imagine the state of the 4-star establishments (at best, the same idea without the grounds and the location). And by the time you get to anything advertising 3 stars, you might do as well to bring your own tent.

But again, things are a-changing, and mostly in a good way. And we must point out that the Hotel Tropical has a new manager - whom we wish well and who may be able to turn things around a bit.
