We felt there should be a separate section on hotels in Manaus, if only because you will probably have to stay in one when you arrive and perhaps before you leave. However the sad fact is that at present the majority of hotels here are pretty poor. It would be like kicking a man when he's down to go into the failings of all the individual establishments, although we list the hotels with what we think is a representative sample of recent guest comments culled from the internet.  

All is not lost, however, as in the run-up to 2014 new hotels are being thrown up with gay abandon and we assume the existing ones will have to pull their socks up in order to compete. We will try to keep you abreast of things from here.

Anyway, here's our current list, in alphabetical order and split between city-centre hotels, hotels outside the centre, and smaller guesthouse-type accommodation. If you're trying to book, see how quick their responses are and how they respond (if at all) to your queries.  For the moment our advice would have to be that if you want to be in the city centre, then just expect the worst and concentrate on the experience of being in the middle of a fascinating city; if you want something a bit more refined, then forget about the exact location and budget an extra few hundred Reais in taxi fares.
