Manaus Guesthouses and B&Bs

The other types of accommodation you will find in and around Manaus are Guesthouses/B&Bs, Pousadas and Hostels. Arguably, these are in descending order of merit. For the purposes of this guide, hotels are defined as establishments which have a full-time employed staff and a reception and restaurant.  A Guesthouse (or B&B) is defined as lodgings provided within the owner’s own home, and where breakfast is provided as part of the service. The Brazilian “pousada” is generally similar to a guesthouse, but not always part of the owner's home, and the Hostel is roughly modelled on the Youth Hostels of the UK or possibly the US.   Once again, standards are very variable, and we list only those which are in some  way distinguishable from the rest. As always, we advise you to seek recent independent reviews and opinions, and of course remember that our forum is a good place to exchange information, check on new comments etc.

Small hotel/guesthouse. Getting some good reviews recently. Outside the city centre, but in a relatively convenient location. Staff reported friendly and helpful.  We think: a sound option, although of course you may need to budget for taxis or buses depending on your itinerary.

In spite of the name, not a guesthouse, but a small pousada/hotel with 10 rooms.  Generally reasonable reviews, with the main problem perhaps being its relative isolation from points of interest, shops etc. You will probably need to budget for taxis or buses. We think: a reasonable option

Pousada in a residential area between the city centre and the airport. Targetted primarily at German visitors and run by Tommy, a German (fluent in English), and his Brazilian wife. Simple accommodation (with a/c), and currently in need of a lick of paint - but charming owners compensate with a very friendly, helpful, relaxed style. Although wheel-chair bound now, Tommy also operates his own tours and trips. We think: a valid option for those who value a friendly personal touch over perfection in style and decor.

Pousada Rio Negro Central Manaus

A guesthouse by our definition, in a busy central location opposite to the Rio Negro Palace on Avenida 7 de Setembro (an area recently re-developed to include a park beside the Palace). No recent reviews and a rumour that it has closed - obviously check first. We think: could be a valid option, within reach of the centre and in a recently redeveloped area.
