Jungle Lodges Listing
The Visit Manaus Jungle lodges listing (see also -
how to choose your lodge)
We have no statistics to prove it, but experience suggests that the
so-called Jungle Lodge is currently the preferred option for a
majority of tourists visiting the Amazon. For this reason we devote
considerable attention to them in our guidebook, and here we give
you our current listing.
We are also
introducing our own reviews of individual lodges,
based on our experience. The first review is already available (see
the link from the
Anavilhanas Lodge listing
below). We hope you find it useful, and will be adding further
reviews in future.
We have indicated in our list with the use of icons those facilities
which we believe may be of particular interest to readers - namely:
the type & nature of any electricity supply, the availability of
air-conditioning, the presence of a restaurant, bar, swimming pool,
shop, and internet access and the availability of free water from a
water fountain. We feel this last one is (or should be) important -
the provision of free water (even if potable rather than mineral)
potentially reduces pollution caused by the disposal of thousands of
plastic mineral water bottles, helps ensure visitors drink enough
water, and ought to make it easier for both the lodge and the guest
- however we also feel that an addition to lodge prices for this
facility is perfectly reasonable
Most lodges, cruises and excursions offer some or all the following
in their programmes: caiman spotting, piranha fishing, a jungle
walk, and a visit to a local village. Due to their location (or
route), some also include a visit to the meeting of the waters, and
where this is the case we have indicated it.
We have tried to include as many operators as possible in our
listing, but the actual situation remains fairly fluid and you may
find new operators entering the market or existing ones leaving. We
should also say that there are probably a large number of operators
in addition to those we have listed, but who do not have any website
or independent advertising or marketing. You will only find these by
talking to agents in Manaus. While quality, service and price are
likely to be extremely variable for these operators, you might
strike it lucky.
The distance of the lodges from Manaus in our listing is the
geographical (straight-line) distance - note that some lodges
advertise their distance based on the actual route they use (tsk,
tsk). To get an idea of where one of the lodges is in relation to
Manaus, you might have a look at our map
here.
Finally, our facilities information is based either on information
provided by the lodge itself, in response to our enquiries, or on
other publicly available documents where the lodge failed to respond
(basically, those lodges which supplied a photo are the only lodges
which replied to our enquiries).
As always, we welcome comment on our ratings, or if any operators
would like to advise us of changes which may affect our assessments,
please do get in touch. And remember to check out our
10 Tips for choosing your
jungle
lodge, as well as
our forum and
blog.
Good luck!

Quite close to Manaus, on the Tarumã river, which is
somewhat affected by urban sprawl (although the Lodge
has its own reserve). Quite expensive, but
infrastructure and organisation are generally good, and
it has its own transport to and from the lodge. A valid
option when time is short, and/or when other factors
impact (age, disability, kids etc). |

Definitively not a lodge, but a hotel, with all the
facilities you would expect of one. Under new
management, and no reviews yet available. Very
expensive, but unlikely to be bettered in terms of
floating luxury. Staff and service seem good, it has its
own transport, and infrastructure is superb. Probably a
valid option if money is no object. |

One of the most remote lodges, in an unspoilt area.
Electricity by generator only (not 24 hrs), and
therefore no hot water, but highly rated by most
visitors - “a very rewarding experience, but not for
those who expect luxury”. Staff and owners reportedly
very helpful & friendly. |

Undoubtedly one of the best-run lodges, with good
service and its own transport - greatly helped
by a very friendly and very efficient English-speaking
Manaus office headed by Valdemar. Expensive, but
relatively luxurious and location is excellent. Not for
you if you want rustic, but very highly recommended by
the majority of visitors. |

| Comments: |
The original and most famous luxury
suspended-platform lodge. Very mixed reviews now and
frequently described as in need of
refurbishment/reinvestment. Expensive, but operates its
own transport service and has air-con. as well as a few
more gimmicky facilities like electric golf carts.
Perhaps becoming somewhat dated in term of both concept
and execution, and arguably now a victim of its own
success. |

Close to Amazon-Eco lodge in what is a very
beautiful and relatively unspoilt area. Unfortunately
suffers from problematic hit-and-miss third-party
transport - guests are
advised not to pay any additional amounts for transfers
to or from the lodge. |

Few reviews. Rustic approach, so no luxury here -
however what feedback there is, is mostly good. Rio

third-party transport. |

Very expensive, luxurious, specialist lodge catering
for Tucunaré (Peacock Bass) fishing. You may be able to

| Comments: |
The Uakari Lodge provides the accommodation for
those visiting the Mamirauá Reserve
(www.mamiraua.org.br), and there seems to be nothing but
praise for it. It is expensive to stay there, and
expensive to reach - but is as remote as it gets, and
fronts a respected wildlife reserve. Facilities are
limited, but this is in keeping with a wholly genuine
ecological emphasis, and the staff reportedly really
know their stuff. |
